How the AP Physics 1 score is calculated
The AP Physics 1 exam has two scored sections. Multiple choice is worth 50% of the exam score. Free response is worth the other 50%.
This AP Physics 1 score calculator converts 40 MCQ questions into 50 weighted points. It adds the four free-response questions for a 40 point raw total, then converts that to 50 weighted points.
The score ranges are projections. College Board sets final cut points after scoring, and the real cutoffs can move each year.

A 3 is passing and may count for credit at some schools. Physics credit often depends on your major, so engineering and science programs may require a higher score.
A 4 is strong. A 5 is the top score and gives you the best chance at credit or placement.
How to get a 5 on AP Physics 1
Practice explaining the model before calculating. Many questions ask you to connect forces, energy, momentum, rotation, waves, or circuits to a physical situation.
Draw clear diagrams. Free-body diagrams, energy bar charts, motion graphs, and labeled axes can help you avoid mistakes and earn reasoning points.
For free response, show symbolic setup before numbers. Units, signs, and clear definitions of variables matter.
