How the AP Biology score is calculated

The AP Biology exam has two scored sections. Multiple choice is worth 50% of the exam score. Free response is worth the other 50%.

This AP Biology score calculator converts your 60 MCQ questions into 50 weighted points. It adds your six FRQ scores for a 34 point raw total, then converts that total into 50 weighted points. Those two numbers make a 100 point composite.

The score ranges on this page are projections. College Board sets AP cut points after scoring, and the real cutoffs can shift each year.

AP Bio exam format (2026)

The 2026 AP Biology exam is a hybrid digital exam. You complete the multiple-choice questions in Bluebook. You also view free-response questions in Bluebook, then handwrite your answers in a paper booklet.

Section I has 60 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour and 30 minutes. This section is 50% of your score. Section II has 6 free-response questions in 1 hour and 30 minutes. There are 2 long questions worth 9 points each and 4 short questions worth 4 points each.

Calculators are allowed on both sections. AP Biology allows a 4-function calculator with square root, a scientific calculator, or a graphing calculator. Bluebook also provides a built-in Desmos scientific calculator. Reference materials, including equations and tables, are available for the exam.

What is a good AP Bio score?

A 3 is a good goal because it means qualified. Many colleges use a 3 as the first score that may earn credit or placement, but biology departments can be stricter.

A 4 is a strong AP Bio score. A 5 is the best score and usually gives you the most credit options. Credit rules vary by college, by major, and by the biology course you want to skip.

How to get a 5 on AP Bio

Practice explaining biology with evidence. Many AP Bio questions ask why a result happened, not only what the result was.

Study data, graphs, and experiments. You should be able to read a table, describe a trend, choose a control, write a null hypothesis, and connect evidence to a claim.

For free response, answer each part directly. Use the task verb, show calculations when asked, label graphs clearly, and write enough reasoning to connect your answer to the biological process.
