How the AP English Language score is calculated
The AP English Language exam has two scored sections. Multiple choice is worth 45% of the score. The three free-response essays are worth 55%.

AP Lang exam format (2026)
The 2026 AP English Language and Composition exam is fully digital. You complete the multiple-choice and free-response sections in Bluebook, and your answers are submitted through the testing app.
Section I has 45 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour. It counts for 45% of your score. The questions ask you to read nonfiction passages, analyze how writers build arguments, and choose effective revisions.
Section II has 3 essays in 2 hours and 15 minutes, including a 15 minute reading period. The essays are synthesis, rhetorical analysis, and argument. Each essay is scored on a 6 point rubric.
