How the AP Precalculus score is calculated

The AP Precalculus exam has four scored parts. Multiple-choice Part A is about 44% of the score. Multiple-choice Part B is about 19%. Free-response Part A is about 19%, and free-response Part B is about 18% in this 100 point estimate.

This AP Precalculus score calculator keeps the calculator and no-calculator parts separate. That makes the estimate more useful because a student can be strong on modeling with technology but weaker on symbolic work, or the other way around.

The score ranges are projections. AP Precalculus is a newer exam, so the final cut points can shift as College Board scores each exam year.

What is a good AP Pre Calc score?

A 3 is a good AP Pre Calc score because it is passing. It may help with placement or elective credit, depending on the school.

A 4 is strong. A 5 is the best score and may be useful if you want to show that you are ready for calculus. College math departments can be strict, so check the exact policy for your major.

How to get a 5 on AP Pre Calc

Practice switching between graphs, tables, equations, and written descriptions. The exam tests whether you understand functions from more than one view.

Use your graphing calculator as a tool, not a shortcut. You still need to explain what a model means and why a value makes sense.

For no-calculator questions, review algebraic manipulation, function notation, inverse functions, logarithms, trigonometry, and polar ideas until the steps feel automatic.
