How the AP Physics 2 score is calculated

The AP Physics 2 exam has two scored sections. Multiple choice is worth 50% of the score. Free response is worth the other 50%.

This AP Physics 2 calculator converts your 40 MCQ questions into 50 weighted points. It adds the four FRQ scores for a 40 point raw total, then converts that total into 50 weighted points.

The FRQ point values come from the current released scoring pattern: mathematical routines, translation between representations, experimental design, and qualitative/quantitative translation. The final AP score cutoffs are still projections.

AP Physics 2 exam format (2026)

The 2026 AP Physics 2 exam is hybrid digital. You complete multiple-choice questions in Bluebook. You view free-response questions in Bluebook, then handwrite answers in a paper booklet.

Section 1 has 40 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour and 20 minutes. Questions can be discrete or grouped around a stimulus, diagram, data set, or scenario.

Section 2 has 4 free-response questions in 1 hour and 40 minutes. The four question types are mathematical routines, translation between representations, experimental design, and qualitative/quantitative translation. Calculators and reference materials are available for the exam.

What is a good AP Physics 2 score?

A 3 is a good first goal because it is passing. Some colleges use a 3 for introductory physics credit, but science and engineering programs may ask for a 4 or 5.

A 4 is strong. A 5 is the best score and gives you the most credit options. Because AP Physics 2 covers electricity, magnetism, waves, optics, and modern physics, credit policies can vary a lot by department.

How to get a 5 on AP Physics 2

Practice explaining the physics before calculating. Many points come from connecting equations, diagrams, and written reasoning.

Use units and signs carefully. In Physics 2, direction, potential difference, charge sign, and energy transfer often decide whether an answer makes sense.

Review released FRQs by question type. A good score needs more than plugging into formulas. You should be able to design an experiment, interpret data, and translate between graphs, words, and equations.
