How the AP U.S. Government score is calculated
The AP U.S. Government and Politics exam has two scored sections. Multiple choice is worth 50% of the score. Free response is worth the other 50%.
This AP U.S. Government score calculator converts your 55 MCQ questions into 50 weighted points. It adds the concept application, quantitative analysis, SCOTUS comparison, and argument essay points for a 17 point raw FRQ total, then converts that total into 50 weighted points.
The score ranges are projections. College Board sets final cut points after scoring, so the exact line between a 2, 3, 4, and 5 can move each year.

A 3 is a good first goal because it is passing and means qualified. Many colleges may give credit or placement for a 3, but policies vary by school.
A 4 is strong. A 5 is the top score and gives you the best chance at credit. For AP Gov, some schools give credit for an introductory government or political science course, while others only give elective credit.
How to get a 5 on AP Gov
Know the required documents and required Supreme Court cases. You do not need to memorize every sentence, but you should know the main rule, principle, and connection to course concepts.
Practice reading charts and tables. The quantitative analysis FRQ often rewards careful reading before any writing starts.
For the argument essay, write a clear claim, use specific evidence, and explain why that evidence proves the claim. Naming a document or case is not enough by itself.
